The Zoo Goes on the road.

March – 7 – 11 2018

Our first trip, the break-in trip was to the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas.  Our first trip with the zoo that is.  All of the critters.  The 3 dogs and the 2 squawker heads. As we reached Atlanta on our first day, hoping to meet my son for lunch, the traffic came to a sudden and complete stop.  A wreck had occurred right over the hill without the opportunity to divert off.  We sat for 2 hours.  The highway was bordered by concrete barriers on both sides.  The emergency vehicles had to squeeze through the middle so everyone had to scrunch up against the sides.    This pushed us back so we weren’t able to meet up with Tony and we ended up being routed by google through some random streets in Atlanta.  We got to the camp grounds by Birmingham after dark.  It was supposed to be a really interesting place.  Tannenhill Ironworks with a grist mill.   We didn’t see it, we got there in the dark and left pretty early.  But we got to be away from everyone else and could plug in our extension cord.  Which ran a little space heater and charged our phones.

Day 2 – couldn’t stand the squawking any more and freed the birds.  Surprisingly they enjoyed watching the world go by.   I had never been to Mississippi so we routed through the middle.  I had seen that they had this Tamale road with tamale stands everywhere.   My criteria for picking one was easy on, easy off the road.  I sample tamales everywhere, these were ok.   We made it to the Crater of Diamonds park, the spaces were nice and wide and we were close to a trail that went to the river.  It was cool enough that we could relocate the van to the mine parking lot and leave critters in it.  We took one dog at a time inside the mine / park.

(Find King hiding in the weeds.) King wasn’t much impressed with the whole process – and since there weren’t that many people where we were searching we let him sit in the shade. Uwe found a microscopic diamond.  Maybe we will find that 20 carat one the next trip!
